Que multidão! Fico
com a impressão de que há mais do que no ano passado. De facto, há tanto mais
que a fluidez da multidão que se verificava no ano passado desapareceu. Talvez
seja uma consequência de uma "nova" população de festivaleiros, que
visitam pela primeira vez o Hellfest, o maior festival de Metal em território francês
e talvez mesmo europeu/mundial. A sua 16ª edição regista o cartaz mais
ambicioso até ao momento, incluindo mais de 160 bandas distribuídas por 6
palcos e 4 dias. Entre elas contam-se nomes lendários como Metallica, Foo
Fighters, Avenged Sevenfold, Megadeth, Saxon, entre muitos muitos outros.
Apesar de muitas mudanças,
organização continua ótima e o The Guardian mantém o seu posto, tal como já era
sabido desde janeiro deste ano. Importante destacar que, este ano, o
merchandising das bandas mudou-se para os lados da Catedral, o que afeta a referida
fluidez de movimento e criou filas de mais de 4 horas para aqueles que procuram
comprar o merchandising oficial. Outras mudanças incluem a remoção do Firepit,
o que é um pouco triste porque era um sítio quente e acolhedor à noite, e da substituição
da roda de Charon por um ótimo lugar para almoçar no Vale.
Mas não é para isso
que cá estamos, certo? Música! Agora que já vimos as novidades da zona, avançamos
para o palco Valley e para os Green Lung que apresentaram um set interessante
de power-stoner. Apesar de, ao princípio não terem mostrado a atmosfera
habitual de Valley, a segunda metade do concerto, mais pesada, permitiu-lhes iniciar
o Circle pit mais lento de sempre! Foi de loucos.
A seguir, fui ouvir
um pouco de Black Metal. Kathryn Sheppard, também conhecida como Sylvaine, fez
um set incrível em Temple, apesar de o som estar um pouco lamacento. Uma pena
para o black metal atmosférico. A sua atuação foi intensa, poderosa, e a sua
energia contagiou todos os presentes. O seu set terminou com uma música folk a
capella incrível que trouxe lágrimas a muitos.
No caminho de volta ao
Valley, pude ver o guardião animado pela primeira vez e a fogueira que está
viva e impressionante. É tão grande! O carinho dos técnicos é evidente na forma
delicada com que a estão a tratar.
O concerto seguinte
foi o dos Graveyard que apresentaram uma atuação fantástica. O seu psyche
stoner cheio de blues foi, sem dúvida, um dos highlights deste dia.
Depois de um pequeno intervalo, chega o cabeça de cartaz de Valley: All Them Witches. Um concerto espetacular! É a quarta vez que os vejo, e é sempre diferente. Nunca ouvi uma música ser tocada duas vezes da mesma forma... Esta banda é uma explosão ao vivo, mesmo que não estejas convencido pelos álbuns. Agora, no final do dia, vou saltar os Dropkick Murphys para descansar um pouco para sexta-feira. Escusado será dizer que é obrigatório manter alguma energia... 4 dias é muito tempo!

Hellfest day one review: what a crowd! I've got the
impression that there were "more" than last year. So much more, in
fact, that the fluidity of last year's crowd is gone. Maybe it's also a
consequence of a 'new' festival-goer population, with more people coming for
the first time and discovering the place?
Well, organisation remains great, though a lot of
changes. The band merch has moved to the sides of the Cathedral, and I feel
like this also impacts the fluidity. The sanctuary wait is wild ! Queue lines
were going almost to the main stages! People have waited over 4 hours for the
official merch!
Other major changes, teased since january: the
Guardian is there! Firepit has been removed, which is a bit sad because it was
a warm and cosy place by night. No Charon's wheel this year,but a great place
to lunch at the Valley. Great adding!
But that's not what we are here for, right? Music!
After checking the new things on the area, let's move to Valley and Green Lung.
Green Lung delivered some interesting power-stoner
set, not that in the usual atmosphere of Valley at the beginning, but an
heavier second part, with but they manage to initiate the slowest Circle pit
ever! That was crazy.
Next move let's hear some Black Metal. Kathryn
Sheppard, also known as Sylvaine, delivered an incredible set in Temple, in
spite of a rather sludgy sound. A pity for atmospheric black metal. Her set was
intense, powerful, and her energy is a blast. She finished with an awesome a
capella folk song that brought tears to many.
Heading back to Valley, we see the guardian animate
for the first time. In place of the firepit, she is alive and impressive. She
is so huge! Tech guys are handling her with such a gentle care, you can see
that they really love her! Back to Valley for Graveyard, psyché stoner, bluesy
as hell. The set was pretty awesome!
After a small break, the headliner of Valley arrives: All Them Witches. Outstanding set! That's the fourth time I see them, and it is always different. Never heard a song played twice the same... This band is a blast live, even if you're not convinced by the albums. Now, end of the day, skipping the Dropkick Murphys to have some rest for friday. Needless to say it's mandatory to keep some energy... 4 days is long!
